Our full tutorial shows you how to create this lasting memorial using cremation ashes with epoxy resin in a beautiful bird mold. Check out our full process video at the bottom of the blog to help you visualise the process.
What you’ll need
- Epoxy Resin – a deep pour like Apex Deep Cast works best for deeper moulds as it allows the bubbles to escape during its slower cure time.
- Silicone Bird Mold – we used this two pack of silicone birds from Amazon.
- Resin Pigments – We used Resin D’Etre and Create and Bloom Crafts pigments for this project.
- Mixing Cups
- Silicone Stirring Sticks
- Safety Equipment (gloves, mask and workspace covering) – Check out our blog on how to keep safe while working with resin.
How it’s done
- Prepare your workspace and ensure you have everything you need to hand. This will help minimise mess and spills.
- Mix your resin according to your brands instructions. We used around 170ml of resin for this mold. Make sure you thoroughly mix, scraping the sides and bottom of your cup until there’s no streaks or cloudy color to your resin.
Blog – how to mix resin properly. - Split your resin in to two cups. One larger amount for your base color and another smaller one for your accent color (if desired).
- Add your pigment to the resin.
TIP: Use no more than 10% pigment to resin ratio or you’ll find your resin won’t fully cure. - Add a small amount of ashes to your base color resin. You’ll only need quarter of a tea spoon here.
TIP: If you’d like to suspend your ashes throughout your piece rather than having it rise to the top – you can add a dot of clear PVA glue or pour in layers. - Pour your resin. We chose to add a gold pigment to this piece and poured in alternation with our base color.
- Allow your resin to cure. Don’t be tempted to check on it before your recommended cure time. You can risk adding dents or fingerprints to your precious piece.
- Un-mold.
TIP: Using some dish soap and water can help you release the resin from the mold more easily. Especially helpful for this mold as the tail can be a little tricky.
