What is Epoxy Resin?
What exactly is epoxy resin? Let’s take a look…
Epoxy resin is a two-part thermosetting polymer system used in crafting, construction, electronics, and coatings. It’s made up of:
🔹 Part A: Epoxy Resin (Base)
🔹 Part B: Hardener (Curing Agent)
When mixed together, these two parts undergo a chemical reaction (called polymerization) that transforms the liquid into a solid, durable plastic.
🧪 Basic Properties of Epoxy Resin:
Property | Description |
---|---|
🧊 Starts as liquid | Must be mixed with hardener to cure |
🕒 Curing time | Typically 12–72 hours, depending on type |
💪 Very strong | Great adhesive and structural strength |
💧 Waterproof | Once cured, it’s water- and chemical-resistant |
🔥 Heat-resistant | Can tolerate moderate to high temperatures |
✨ Glossy finish | Often used for clear, glass-like surfaces |
🎨 Common Uses of Epoxy Resin:
Application | Purpose |
---|---|
Art & Jewelry | Resin art, river tables, pendants |
Crafting | Sealing and coating surfaces |
Construction | Concrete bonding, floor coatings |
Electronics | Potting (protecting circuits) |
Marine | Boat building and repair |
Automotive | Structural repairs, carbon fiber work |
⚠️ Important Notes:
- Mixing ratio matters – Usually 1:1 or 2:1 (resin to hardener). Too much or too little hardener = sticky or soft cure.
- Curing takes time – Unlike UV resin, epoxy needs hours or days to fully harden.
- Work in a ventilated area – Some epoxy resins can emit strong fumes during curing. Take a look at our Resin Safety Blog for more information on this.
