What you’ll need

Ways you can add mica powder to resin

Adding mica powder to resin

  1. Prepare the resin
Mix the resin and hardener according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Add mica powder
Start with a small amount (about 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon per ounce of resin). You can add more if needed.
  3. Mix thoroughly
Stir well to ensure the powder is evenly distributed.
  4. Pour into the mold
Slowly pour the resin into the mold.
  5. Remove bubbles
Use a heat gun or torch to pop any bubbles on the surface.

Dusting the mold with mica powder

  1. Coat the Mold
Use a dry brush to lightly dust mica powder into the silicone mold before pouring the resin.
We love these makeup brushes for doing this job.
  2. Tap off excess powder
  3. Clean your edges
If you’ve got any mica powder on places where you don’t want it. Don’t panic! Use some kitchen roll or baby wipes with alcohol spray to carefully clean off the mica.
  4. Pour clear or colored resin
Dark opaque colours really help your mica powder pop. Clear or translucent colours can help add depth.

Creating mica swirls and marble

  1. Mix different colors in to your resin
Divide the resin into separate cups and add different mica powder colors.
  2. Layer or swirl
Pour the different colors into the mold and swirl them using a stick for a marbled look.

Tips for Best Results:

  • Test different ratios to find the intensity of color you prefer.
  • Use pearlescent or interference mica for a multi-dimensional shimmer.
  • Seal the mold first with a thin layer of clear resin to prevent mica from shifting.
  • Experiment with different application techniques for unique effects.
