What is Epoxy Resin?
What exactly is epoxy resin? Let’s take a look…
Epoxy resin is a two-part thermosetting polymer system used in crafting, construction, electronics, and coatings. Itβs made up of:
πΉ Part A: Epoxy Resin (Base)
πΉ Part B: Hardener (Curing Agent)
When mixed together, these two parts undergo a chemical reaction (called polymerization) that transforms the liquid into a solid, durable plastic.
π§ͺ Basic Properties of Epoxy Resin:
| Property | Description |
|---|---|
| π§ Starts as liquid | Must be mixed with hardener to cure |
| π Curing time | Typically 12β72 hours, depending on type |
| πͺ Very strong | Great adhesive and structural strength |
| π§ Waterproof | Once cured, it’s water- and chemical-resistant |
| π₯ Heat-resistant | Can tolerate moderate to high temperatures |
| β¨ Glossy finish | Often used for clear, glass-like surfaces |
π¨ Common Uses of Epoxy Resin:
| Application | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Art & Jewelry | Resin art, river tables, pendants |
| Crafting | Sealing and coating surfaces |
| Construction | Concrete bonding, floor coatings |
| Electronics | Potting (protecting circuits) |
| Marine | Boat building and repair |
| Automotive | Structural repairs, carbon fiber work |
β οΈ Important Notes:
- Mixing ratio matters β Usually 1:1 or 2:1 (resin to hardener). Too much or too little hardener = sticky or soft cure.
- Curing takes time β Unlike UV resin, epoxy needs hours or days to fully harden.
- Work in a ventilated area β Some epoxy resins can emit strong fumes during curing. Take a look at our Resin Safety Blog for more information on this.
