Help, my UV resin won’t cure
Don’t panic! This is a really common issue with UV resin. It usually it comes down to a few fixable causes. Here’s a checklist to troubleshoot why your UV resin isn’t curing:
🔍 Why UV Resin Won’t Cure (and how to fix it)
1. ❌ Resin Layer Too Thick
- UV resin only cures well in thin layers (1–3 mm max).
- If it’s too thick, the top might cure but the inside stays liquid.
✅ Fix: Work in thin layers, curing each one before adding the next.
2. ❌ Weak or Wrong Light Source
- Not all UV lamps are strong enough. Weak desk lamps or cheap UV lights can fail.
- UV resin usually cures best with 365–405 nm UV light, 36W or higher.
✅ Fix: Use a nail lamp, curing lamp, or UV flashlight designed for resin.
The UV JDiction Lamp is high powered, re-chargeable (meaning its wireless) and double sided. Check it out on Amazon here.
3. ❌ Not Enough Curing Time
- Some resins need 2–5 minutes per layer (or more for darker pigments).
✅ Fix: Increase curing time, and rotate the piece to expose all sides. - TIP: Always check the instructions for your chosen brand.
4. ❌ Too Much Color or Additives
- Dark pigments, opaque dyes, or lots of glitter block UV penetration.
✅ Fix: Use only a small amount of color, or cure longer/thinner layers. Try using lighter translucent colours.
5. ❌ Wrong Surface or Mold
- Opaque or colored molds (like solid silicone) block UV light.
✅ Fix: Use clear silicone molds for UV resin projects.
6. ❌ Resin Quality or Storage
- Old, expired, or improperly stored resin may not cure.
- Exposure to heat or light in storage can ruin it.
✅ Fix: Always store in a cool, dark place, tightly sealed.
🛠 Quick Fix for Tacky or Uncured Resin
- Wipe sticky surfaces with isopropyl alcohol to remove residue.
- Apply a thin clear coat of UV resin on top, then cure again under a strong lamp.
- If the inside is liquid, scrape it out and re-pour in thinner layers.
