Is Resin Food Safe?
Are you wondering if resin is food safe? Are you looking to create things like cutting boards, cake stands and tumblers? We’ve got all the key information you need to know.
Food safe resin brands
Not all resins are certified as food safe.
Always check your chosen brand and know that even different types of resin from the same brand may differ and not all will be food safe. If you’re not sure or it is not clear when you go to buy your resin, always ask the seller directly. They should be able to provide you with a data sheet that provides all of the resins key information and any certifications such as being classified as food safe.
We love working with Apex Quantum Resin which is a high quality food safe brand that is also:
- Non toxic
- Has no odour
- Is VOCs free
- Is BPA free
- As well as being food Safe
Adding colour to food safe resin
A resin will only be certified as food safe in its pure form, meaning, as soon as you add anything to it, it may no longer be food safe.
Pigments, glitters and other colourants like alcohol ink will unlikely be food safe.
So what can you do?
If you want to add colour or texture to your project and make it food safe, adding a clear layer or your food safe resin will seal your project (with a top coat of food safe resin or food safe sealing spray) and as long as it covers all undercoats, will allow it to be classified as food safe again.
Resin for food preparation and serving dishes
Many resins on the market will be branded as food safe for ‘incidental contact’. What does this mean? Well, in resin terms, it means that if your food item touches your resin surface accidently or for a short period of time, then it’ll be ok.
But … you wouldn’t for example be ok adding food directly to your resin or using it as a cutting board or serving platter. Epoxy resin can be extremely strong but cutting on it could cause resin particles to break off and enter food.
So what can I do if I want to make cake stands and cutting boards?
Cutting boards, cake stands and platters can make beautiful decorative pieces but you can also ensure your food is laid over napkins, clingfilm / saran wrap etc. to make it suitable for serving from.
Is it safe to use resin on tumblers and glasses?
If you plan on using resin to decorate tumblers or glasses, you need to make sure you select a brand like Apex that is specifically certified as food safe.
You also need to keep in mind the above – this being that your resin is only certified as food safe when made up as per the brands directions. Adding colour or texture will mean that it needs a clear top coat in order to ensure it is food safe.
