How to sand eco resin
Sanding eco resin (such as Eco Pour H20, Jesmonite, Ecopoxy, or other plant-based and water-based resins) is similar to sanding traditional resins, but there are a few important things to think about to keep the finish smooth and avoid damage. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
🛠️ What You Need:
- Sandpaper (various grits: 120 → 240 → 400 → 800 → 1000+)
We like this pack from Amazon as it comes with a large range of sandpaper and they can be cut to smaller pieces. They’re also suitable for wet and dry sanding. - Sanding block
You can get blocks pre-wrapped in sandpaper like these or you can create your own with a wooden block wrapped in sandpaper. - Orbital sander (optional but great for larger projects) and dremel also works well for smaller pieces especially terrazzo projects that require a good amount of sanding.
- Water (for wet sanding) and a washing up bowl
- Respirator/dust mask (especially when dry sanding)
- Gloves and eye protection
- Clean cloth
🔧 Steps to Sand Eco Resin:
1. Cure Completely
Make sure the eco resin is fully cured (typically 12–24 hours or per manufacturer’s instructions). Sanding too early can cause smearing or uneven surfaces.
2. Start with Lower Grit (if needed)
- If the surface has rough edges or major imperfections, start with 120 or 180 grit sandpaper.
- Use a sanding block for flat surfaces to keep things even.
- Sand in a circular motion for curved or rounded pieces.
3. Progressively Use Higher Grits
- Move to 240, 400, and eventually up to 1000–1500+ if you want a smooth, polished finish.
- Each stage removes the scratches from the previous grit.
4. Wet Sanding (Recommended)
- Especially useful for eco resins, as it reduces dust and overheating.
- Dip sandpaper in water or keep the surface wet while sanding.
- Wet sanding with 400+ grit gives a cleaner, glossier finish.
5. Clean Between Grits
- Rinse or wipe the surface clean before switching sandpaper grits.
- This prevents cross-contamination and deep scratches.
⚠️ Tips & Warnings:
- Always sand in a well-ventilated area.
- Eco resins can be softer than epoxy—don’t apply too much pressure. Don’t sand too much or your piece will become thing and brittle.
- If using an electric sander, use light pressure to avoid gouging.
