Is Eco Resin different to Plaster of Paris?

Are you wondering if Eco Resins like Eco Pour H2O, ResinCrete and other resin casting powders are similar to plaster of paris? There are some differences and benefits to using Eco Resin over plaster of paris.

What is plaster of paris?

Plaster of Paris is a quick-setting material made from gypsum (a natural mineral). It is created by heating gypsum to about 150°C (302°F), which evaporates the water in it resulting in a fine powder. When mixed with water, plaster of paris forms a paste that hardens as it dries. This makes it an ideal material for molding, casting, and sculpting.

What are the benefits of using plaster of paris?

  • Quick-setting
Plaster of Paris has a fast setting time, usually within 10 to 15 minutes, which makes it useful for quick repairs or artistic applications.
  • Smooth finish
It can be smoothed easily and takes on fine details, making it ideal for molds, sculptures, and casts.
  • Heat-resistant
When it hardens, it becomes relatively heat-resistant, which is why it is used in making fireproof products or molds for metal casting.
  • Can be painted
You can easily paint plaster of paris which makes it a great customisable product.
  • Cheap
Plaster of paris is readily available and a cheap product to source.

What is Eco Resin?

Eco Resins are water activated casting powders that like plaster of paris come in one part where you simply add the water and it is ready to pour.

Why is Eco Resin better than plaster of paris?

  • Strong
Eco Resins are much stronger than plaster of paris and less likely to break when fully cured.
  • High heat resistance
With a high tolerance to heat, eco resins are great for use with candles and as coasters etc.
  • Longer working time
Eco Resins offer better flexibility as they take 20-30 minutes to cure unlike plaster of paris which can set in 10 minutes.
  • Smoother
When pouring plaster of paris, the underside is often rough and requires a lot of sanding and finishing. Eco Resins are smoother and you’ll find you don’t have to sand as much.
  • Easier to pour
Once mixed, eco resins are a smoother liquid which means they are less prone to bubbles and even better for capturing intricate details from your mould.
