How to mix epoxy resin
Are you looking for step by step instructions on how to mix epoxy resin? Well, we’ve got them!
Mixing epoxy resin is all about precision and patience. Here’s how to get a smooth, bubble-free, solid result:
🧪 What You’ll Need:
- Epoxy resin and hardener (they come in a 2-part kit – usually labeled part A and part B)
- Mixing cups (preferably marked for accurate measurement). We love these ones from Amazon.
- Stir sticks (wooden or plastic). Silicone sticks like these are best as they can be easily cleaned and reused.
- Gloves and protective gear.
Check out our blog on resin safety equipment. - Timer or stopwatch
- Optional: heat gun or torch (for bubbles), coloring pigments, silicone molds
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Read the Instructions
Always check your specific resin kit’s instructions. Ratios vary—most are 1:1 or 2:1 (resin to hardener).
2. Measure Precisely
- Use separate, clean measuring cups.
- Pour resin first, then hardener.
- Measure by volume unless your product says to use weight.
⚠️ Mistakes in ratio = sticky mess or brittle cure.
3. Mix Slowly & Thoroughly (3-5 minutes)
- Pour both parts into a larger clean container.
- Stir slowly (to avoid air bubbles) but thoroughly.
- Scrape the sides and bottom constantly.
- Mix until it’s fully uniform and not cloudy.
Tip: If it looks marbled or streaky, it’s not ready yet.

4. (Optional) Transfer & Mix Again
- For the best results, pour into a second container and mix again (aka “double-cup mixing”). This ensures no unmixed residue sticks to the sides/bottom.
5. Add Color or Inclusions (if desired)
- Once fully mixed, you can add mica powder, alcohol inks, or dye.
- Stir gently to incorporate without whipping in bubbles.
6. Pour & Pop Bubbles
- Pour slowly into your mold or onto your surface.
- Use a heat gun, torch, alcohol spray or even a toothpick to remove bubbles from the surface.
Tip: Read our blog on how to minimise bubbles in resin.
7. Let It Cure
- Leave it covered, in a dust-free area.
- Curing times vary (usually 24–72 hours – always check your brands instructions for full cure times). Don’t touch it before then! (We know it’s tempting but you’ll end up a sticky mess and can cause ripples in your resin).
